A sharp mind and linguistic ability will always be key to a good translator/interpreter, however technology has changed how they work.

The different types of technology that are available for translators/interpreters include

translation memory software
machine translation
electronic and online dictionaries and terminology lists
voice recognition software
work flow management systems
internet search
online discussion forums

Not all translators/interpreters will use all of the above, but it is certain that they are more expected to use various technologies and be aware of different software.
