The purpose of the translation e-workshop is to provide translators and would-be translators with an opportunity to practice and improve their translation skills in their own time, and within a definite timetable and structure.
In the translation e-workshop there will be an opportunity to translate two texts of a similar length and standard to those found in the corresponding examinations and receive comments on those translations from a tutor who is an experienced translator and a member of the Association’s Register of Examination Markers.
The translation e-workshop is held solely by e-mail. All direct communication between the individual and his/her tutor takes place via e-mail only.
The Welsh and English linguistic skills of all those taking part are expected to correspond to the expectations of the relevant translation e-workshop.
The translation e-workshop has proved to be an effective and popular means of learning and of providing training for people in their own time. It can be followed as part of one’s preparations for sitting the Association’s Entrance Examinations, or as a part of an individual’s training and professional development as a translator.
The translation e-workshop takes place over a period of about a month, as follows:
In the translation e-workshop at Full membership level the translation of the first text must be sent to the tutor a week after the start of the translation e-workshop. The tutor will send comments a week later. The second text will be sent on the following Monday, before lunchtime, and the translation must be sent to the tutor by 2pm on the following Thursday. The timetable for the second text is the same as for the ‘homework’ in the examination at Full level. The translation e-workshop ends a week later when the tutor sends comments on the translation of the second text.
In the translation e-workshop at Basic membership level the translation of the first text must be sent to the tutor a week after the start of the translation e-workshop. The second text will be sent immediately, and the translation must be sent to the tutor ten days later. The translation e-workshop ends a week later when the tutor sends comments on the translation of the second text.
Each tutor will be assigned no more than ten individuals. We, therefore, recommend that you register and pay as soon as possible, and do not leave it until the last minute, as places will be allocated on a first come basis.
